Maymuru took up the guitar at age 15, listening to respected Top End band Yothu Yindi (which featured Mandawuy Yunupingu, one of the founders of Garma) and playing along. Since then it has been a meteoric rise, joining Yothu Yindi in his early 20's and touring Europe with the group, as well as playing with his own band.
